The participation of women in science has been invisible for centuries: scientists.

Mexican scientists warned that today their names are being erased from investigations by decision of superiors.

Given this, María Emilia Beyer, director of Universum, explained that in her work as a science communicator she has written about invisible women scientists or about many others who, despite not being scientists, did contribute their discoveries to the research of their husbands or others. men, without their work being recognized.

"I dedicate myself to bringing these women to light so that those who read these articles know that they existed and that it was a social issue that prevented their names from being authored, not their intelligence," he explained at a press conference.

Within the framework of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2022, the Secretariat of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (SECTEI) of Mexico City organized a dialogue between scientists attended by Dr. Mariana Martínez Sánchez, the teacher Laura Díaz, doctor Dannia Colín and teacher María Emilia Beyer Ruíz.

Colín, doctor in Biomedical Sciences, assured that in the current context her name has been excluded from investigations by decision of her superiors: “I have collaborated in works that have won prizes and my name does not appear on the paper, only the names of the mens. Even though half the research was done by me.”

She also emphasized that denying credit to female scientists for their discoveries has not been the only way in which women have been separated from science, since various health studies are carried out taking male bodies as a reference with the excuse that females have many hormonal changes.

“For example, the symptoms of a heart attack that appear in textbooks are for men, but women do not respond in the same way. So the mortality rate of women due to heart attack is higher in women simply because their symptoms are not recognized, ”explains the expert.
